IDM Gateway
“Starting Developmental Process Consulting” Teleclass or Self-Study Option
The IDM Gateway, available in Teleclass and Self-Study format, introduces professionals to consulting to clients’ mental process, whether in the form of coaching, mentoring, management consulting, or otherwise. The course provides study materials for understanding the three perspectives on clients that are central to the Constructive Developmental Framework (CDF) taught at IDM. CDF views clients as differing in three aspects:
- social-emotional development
- cognitive development
- psychological balance at work.
Reasons for Taking the Course
Coaching can only be as effective as your notion of client’s potential is broad. The more you reduce your client to a performance machine, the less do you see what needs to be developed. The Gateway course effectively helps you undo your blinders as to clients’ developmental and psychological complexity. It challenges you to rethink your profession, whether you are a coach, mentor, consultant, mediator, social worker, or manager.
To judge from testimonials over the years, Gateway is likely to “overthrow the apple cart” of your life, since it helps you completely revamp your view of yourself and your clients. This is because Gateway makes you aware of the fact that the social world in which you live is stratified in the sense that people live at different levels of social-emotional meaning making and cognitive sense making, whether they live in the U.S. or in China.
Gateway helps you to adopt a more realistic and crisp view of the social world where people of different levels of development live together and barely ‘understand’ each other. Gateway also instills in you the hypothesis that the two strands of adult development, regarding the way you make meaning of your experiences and ‘understand’ the world, are very different indeed. Consequently, you begin to ask yourself: ‘how well balanced are these two strands of development in myself at this point in time?’ Gateway also provides an incitement for shaping yourself into a new kind of HR professional who is no longer blind to the influence of adult development on daily performance and leadership. In addition, it is a motivator for requesting your own developmental assessment in order to support self development along evidence-based lines (see our Assessment Services page).
Another shift Gateway helps you make concerns the issue of how ‘behavior’ and ‘learning’ relate to development. You learn that, while your behavior patterns were formed in childhood in adolescence and can never be left behind, your adult development gives you many opportunities to “straighten them out.” You get a glimpse of what makes you do what you do, and why, even without an explicit assessment.
In short, Gateway lives up to its name. It is a gate to walk through if you want to take responsibility for yourself.
