IDM Gateway Self-Study Option
“Short Introduction to Applied Developmental Theory”
Gateway Self Study was designed for professionals looking for rather immediate applications of developmental insights to their daily work. This direction of interest precludes acquiring thorough developmental assessment skills but promotes adopting new perspectives on yourself and your clients based on insight into adult development.
You can start this class any time and pursue it at your own pace. When you have worked yourself through the self-study part of the course, you let IDM know that you are ready for a live teleclass (four 2-hr sessions) on the subject. In the live part of Gateway what you learned will be deepened by rehearsing assessment techniques informally and discussing examples from your practice. By listening to recordings of a live Gateway class during self study, you get an inkling of how other people have engaged with the material, the questions it raised for them, and the ideas it engendered, so that you are fully prepared for live interactions.
The Constructive Developmental Framework you learn in Gateway Self Study comprises three perspectives on clients:
- The cognitive perspective regarding the client's present level of cognitive development (sense making)
- The social-emotional perspective regarding the client's present level of meaning making
- The psychological perspective regarding the client's balance at work in terms of his/her self conduct, approach to tasks, and interpersonal perspective (emotional intelligence).
Although on the PD track, pursuing the third perspective remains an elective, Gateway self study provides a basis for linking what you intuit and know about your clients’ behavior to the developmental, mental growth, issues discussed in the first two perspectives.
Gateway Self-Study course includes:
- Set of 6 2-hour audio recordings of live Gateway teleclass
- Course handouts over 200 pages
- Article on methodology
- Access to articles and presentations
- Completion Interview with Dr. Laske to assess your learning
