Developmental Interviewing Intensive
8 Sessions - 16 hours Teleseries
When communicating with others, we often do not realize that our communication with them has not only a linguistic, but also an emotional and cognitive, structure. We certainly are not aware that the latter two kinds of structures can be conceptually separated and understood independently of each other and, based upon their separation, in their specific relationship. This is because most verbal communications are focused on specific contents and also because they are informal in the sense that they follow social guidelines implicitly accepted but never reflected upon by speakers.
IDM’s Developmental Interviewing Intensive brings what is typically left unexamined in a discourse to light in an attempt to benefit the clients interviewed. The intensive involves learning to decode how an interviewee presently answers two questions central to his/her life: (1) what should I do and for whom? [the “social-emotional” aspect of conversations] and (2) what can I do and what are my options? [the “cognitive” aspect of conversations], and how answers to these questions shape what clients perceive as a PROBLEM.
The intensive teaches a set of evolutionary concepts and conversational tools called mind openers based on which the interviewer can make transparent to clients interpretations of the world that are presently beyond their reach. Since the interviews practiced in class are semi-structured [thus repeatable with different clients], when they are transferred to coaching and consulting conversations, participants’ communications gain a high degree of crispness and transparency. Simultaneously, clients gain in terms of trust and understanding as well as self-insight in interaction with the interviewer.
The Interview Intensive follows an action-learning methodology. After a short theoretical introduction, participants split into three parties:
- the action learning coach (instructor and moderator)
- an interviewee (volunteer)
- a group of listeners (action learning team).
For each class session, a particular set of interview prompts or class of thought forms to be learned is selected as focus of attention. Depending on whether the interviewing is social-emotional or cognitive, the interviewee is either questioned about his/her meaning making of salient life or work experiences, or is drawn out about a “problem” s(he) is experiencing by the coach. Either way, the interviewee’s meaning making and sense making become transparent. This enables the consultant or coach to make highly effective interventions. Interventions are “highly effective” if they do not simply focus on a problem or issue but on how these are mentally generated within the client’s consciousness.
The Intensive was not designed from scratch. Rather, it is based on a decade of experience in teaching cognitive and social-emotional interviewing for the purpose of giving individuals feedback on their present phase of adult development. In contrast to this assessment endeavor, in the Intensive the focus lies on addressing immediate practical problems, but framed by an understanding of who the client is (size of person) who “has” the problem. This approach benefits clients because they learn to examine the way in which they presently construct their world, emotionally and/or intellectually. Clients thus better understand why they are having certain problems or issues, and why the problems take the form they have. In short, clients gain insight into what is their peculiar frame of reference.
As to study materials, the 8 session/16 hr. Developmental Interviewing Intensive is based on slides and articles that constitute a cogent framework for intensive interviewing rehearsals. Participants are interviewed by the instructor (who models optimal interviewing), but also interview each other in order to gain fluency in using the new communication methods.
The Developmental Interviewing Intensive will be restricted to 8 participants maximally, and 4 participants minimally, to ensure an optimal interviewing experience.
